It’s never too late to become an entrepreneur. Just ask Maureen “Reenie” Oliveto.

Reenie, who has a patent pending on two inventions and ran her own shop, Designs by Reenie, in Cornwall, was interested in crafts for decades before it became anything more than a hobby. Most of her time was spent working at the Cornwall Public Library and raising her two children. It wasn’t until she got interested in making jewelry that she found her passion.

Reenie was fond of making works of beaded jewelry which featured even spaces between the beads. Unfortunately, creating these even spaces was a difficult and tedious process, so Reenie solved the problem by inventing the Easy Knotter, a small tool that allows users to create evenly-spaced knots in moments.

Wondering whether or not her tool was an original idea, Reenie got in touch with a lawyer and conducted a patent search. Upon learning that no one else had come up with this idea yet, Reenie went about turning her little invention into a product.

She found business partners who were able to get the Easy Knotter manufactured. She appeared on Jewelry Television to sell and promote her tool. She traveled the country, spending several weekends at bead trade shows, where the Easy Knotter got even more exposure.

The Easy Knotter quickly became one of the fastest-selling items in the history of Jewelry Television’s “Jewel School” program, and wherever she goes, Reenie finds that people love the product.

All the while, Reenie discovered that friends and family were always thrilled to help. Reenie likes to talk about “all the wonderful people” who have helped her along the way.

As her business grew, Reenie opened up her own shop on Main Street to showcase her own jewelry designs, which feature the highest-quality materials and beads she can find. She very much enjoyed running a shop, but decided to close down after a year in business when she decided to focus her efforts on yet another invention.

Realizing that the bracelets she liked to wear and create could be difficult to put on without assistance from someone else, she invented the Bracelet Valet, which makes the process of putting on a bracelet easier than it has ever been.

Now she has two inventions to her name, and has closed her shop to focus exclusively on travelling to bead trade shows throughout the country to promote the Easy Knotter and Bracelet Valet. Reenie will, however, be renting space in her friend Luann’s new shop at 282 Main Street in Cornwall.

Turning these products into profit hasn’t been easy, though. Since 2005, Reenie has poured thousands of dollars into her business. She still travels the country, working through the weekend at trade shows. She’s a familiar face at Jewelry Television, and now may even find her way to QVC, thanks to the Bracelet Valet.

As always, the people who have helped her continue to offer their support. “I couldn’t do it without them,” Reenie says.
