General News: Sheboy, Student Safety Discussed at BOE Meeting

December 19, 2012

By Joseph Oliveto

Although Superintendent Timothy Rehm stated that there were “a lot of things to celebrate” for the Cornwall Central School District at Monday night’s Board of Education meeting, the evening was marked by a sense of sadness.

Dr. Frank Sheboy, who will be leaving Cornwall Central High School to take a position in Goshen at the end of the month, was in attendance, and few people in the room remained silent on their feelings about his departure.

A woman in the audience said “I’m sure I speak for many parents” when she thanked Dr. Sheboy for providing students with “a foundation to succeed.”

Student Representative Taylor Wright grew tearful when reading a statement in honor of Dr. Sheboy. She presented him with a gift on behalf of his students and spoke warmly of the memories she and many others would have of her principal.

Individual members of the Board all thanked Dr. Sheboy for his service and wished him the best of luck in Goshen.

Dr. Sheboy responded, saying it had been his “utmost pleasure to serve the community and children of Cornwall Central School District.” He remarked that what he would miss most would be the daily interaction with students he enjoyed while working at the high school.

The resignation of Dr. Sheboy was not the only important issue the Board felt the need to address, though. Speaking on the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, Mr. Rehm said, “Unfortunately, the entire country is in mourning over twenty innocent children,” but was pleased to announce that the hard work done by administrators and staff over the weekend ensured that Monday was “a perfectly normal day” for Cornwall students, who may have felt uncomfortable returning to school after such events.

Mr. Rehm was adamant that the employees of the school district have always worked hard to ensure the safety of their students, but also admitted that these events force administrators to consider what more can be done. As such, several new security measures will be put in place. Visitors to the schools will be required to present photo ID at the front desk, parents dropping off their children will be asked to leave them at the greeter’s desk instead of bringing them down to their classroom, all staff will be required to wear badges, and classroom doors will remain in locked mode.

Mr. Rehm concluded his statements on the matter by assuring everyone that although it had been a difficult weekend, “the district is certainly focused and ready to move forward.”
