General News: Candlelight Vigil Held at Traffic Circle

December 18, 2012

By Michael Summerfield

At 10:00PM Friday night we felt the need to do something positive and reassuring for the community following the horrendous events in Newtown, CT. If you walked around our town that day, you could see that people were clearly in pain.

The candlelight vigil was announced that night on Facebook and was coordinated with Helen Bunt, President of the Lions, James Kerr, Lynn Beesecker, Randy Clark and the entire Lions membership to get the word out and rally participants. Word spread virally as well as through pamphlets posted all around the town and village.

Around one hundred and fifty people gathered at Chadeyne Circle and the surrounding sidewalks at 5:00. After the firehouse whistle blew, Dr. Paul Min of the Bethlehem Church provided the opening prayer. Cornwall-on-Hudson Mayor (and Lions Past-President) Brendan Coyne sang "An Irish Blessing" A ccapella. Lions VP, James Kerr assembled a group of singers and musicians including Matt Keller (guitar) and son Tom (on trumpet), Jeff Knight and Taylor Summerfield (guitar) and sang "Let There Be Peace on Earth" and "Silent Night." There were long breaks for meditation and reflection between songs. Lions VP Lynn Beesecker coordinated with Reverend Andrew Peck-McClain of the Cornwall Methodist Church to provide the closing prayer..

We are all children inside and as parents our hearts went out to our near-neighbors in Newtown.

One of the objectives for the Cornwall Lions this year is to provide a support and communication infrastructure to share needs, volunteer opportunities and resources across all community groups, clubs and churches.
