General News: New Businesses in 2012

November 25, 2012

By Joseph Oliveto

Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson have always been proud of their local businesses, and residents have always enthusiastically supported the various shops and restaurants which operate in the area. Despite the economic burden faced by many in recent years, Cornwall has continued to welcome new businesses which thrive thanks to a supportive community. In 2012, three new shops opened in the town and village. Each one is a welcome addition to the local economy.

Hudson Valley Quilt & Sew

Located at 1 Idlewild Avenue in Cornwall-on-Hudson, Hudson Valley Quilt & Sew, which has been open since August 24, boasts an impressive space filled with quilting fabrics, books, tools, accessories, and kits for anyone interested in the craft of quilting. Large tables towards the back of the store stand ready for customers who wish to sign up for a quilting class. The shop’s owner and operator, Annet Mileo, explains that the store caters to both quilters and sewers. She has already been an active participant in the community, assisting the local Girl Scout Troop 26 in creating their new flag. The shop has a Facebook page for anyone interested in gathering more information.

After years of making jewelry and offering classes, Maureen Oliveto finally accomplished the goal of opening her own shop in March of this year. The store, located at 292B Main Street in Cornwall, is split into two sections. The front features Maureen’s jewelry, which she creates using the best materials and beads she can find. The back of the shop is stocked with supplies for crafters to make their own works of jewelry. Maureen continues to offer classes in jewelry-making, teaching customers to use the Easy Knotter, her patent pending invention that simplifies the jewelry-making process. Follow Designs by Reenie on Facebook for updates about yet another invention that Maureen has a patent pending on, which she expects to have in stock very soon.

Tina’s Basket

Cornwall residents with a taste for authentic Mediterranean and Greek food will be happy to learn that Tina’s Basket, located at 304 Main Street and open since October 14, offers a wide variety of delicious dishes, from falafel, hummus, shawarma, to desserts like baklava, just to name a few. The owners of Tina’s Basket worked very hard to get where they are, spending the last two years making a name for themselves at local farmers markets, setting up shop at five different markets each week before opening up on Main Street. Tina’s Basket is also happy to offer gluten-free breads, cookies, and desserts upon request.

In these times, local businesses need all the support they can get. We urge our readers to seek these shops out and make them feel welcome in Cornwall.
