General News: Storm King School News

September 16, 2012

The Storm King School welcomed 125 new and returning students to campus Tuesday, September 4. There were new students from China, Mexico, Russia, Korea, Rwanda, and Turkey. The new international students came to school a week before the returning students. New international student orientation week included taking tours of their new home, exploring New York City, and hiking in Black Rock Forest. Many students said the highlights of the week were going to the Broadway show Spider Man: Turn off the Dark and exploring the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum.

Most students arrived a week later and, after a short week of classes, everyone continued with the Mountain Day tradition of climbing Storm King Mountain. Saturday afternoon, the dean of students cancelled outdoor activities, including the Storm King Olympics, because of the forecast for dangerous storms. By evening, students were ready to let loose when an improvisational group out of Brooklyn, NY, called The Peoples Improv Theater or The PIT took over the Walter Reade, Jr., Theater. Students and faculty alike were able to jump on stage and perform. Math teacher Scott Simontacchi said, “It was great to see such active student participation between both old and new students. Student Chandler Zhang had the chance to get on stage with the group. “During one part of the show they had me making ostrich sounds while other students were acting out a scene. Every time someone’s phone rang, I had to make the sound, and they had to guess what animal I was. It was really fun.” On Sunday, students had a chance to give back to the community by participating in a fundraiser at Rocking Horse Ranch in Highland, with all proceeds to benefit the Hudson Valley Food Bank.

The week was a success with a smooth transition into the 2012-2013 year. Paul Domingue, the new head of school, was impressed with how the week developed, noting, “We’ve had a very smooth start to the new school year, and I’m so impressed by our students! For the past week I’ve been visiting classes, watching sports practices, and spending time getting to know the students and their parents. If the first week is an indication, we’re in for a terrific year at SKS.”

Founded in 1867, The Storm King School helps students translate potential into success as they prepare for college and meaningful lives. Through academic classes, outstanding fine and performing arts, competitive and club sports, outdoor adventure, and interesting extracurricular activities, the faculty and staff offer boarding and day students in grades 8-12 opportunities to enrich themselves through learning and confidence building.
