General News: Raising Farm Fresh Food at Home

March 20, 2012

On Saturday, March 24th the Hudson Highlands Land Trust will host From Peas to Bees, a community forum on raising farm fresh foods in your own backyard at the Highlands Country Club, 955 Route 9D in Garrison, New York. The free event, scheduled from 10:00am to 3:00pm, will feature two moderated hour-and-a-half-long panel discussions. Children’s education programming will be provided in a separate room during the panel discussions by members of HHLT’s River of Words educators. Participants will receive lunch and the opportunity to browse information tables and exhibits during breaks before and after the panels.

The morning panel, Fruit & Vegetable Growing at Home, will present an introduction to gardening edibles on different scales: a patio deck, village backyard, or larger area. Panelists will explain how to plan, plant and maintain your fruit and vegetable garden. They will share tips they have learned through their own successes and failures. Attendees will be invited to participate in the discussion and ask questions. Panelists include and panelists Jason Angell, Longhaul Farm; Sarah Brown, Eden Village Camp; James Geppner, Common Ground Farm Board Member; Chris Ferber, The Garrison; and moderator Gwendolyn Bounds, WSJ Live anchor and backyard farmer.

The afternoon session, Raising Farm Animals & Beekeeping, will focus on the responsibilities and rewards of caring for smaller farm animals and bees, helping beginners decide which is right for them. The panelists will discuss topics like the importance of knowing local laws, good neighbor relations and the space and housing requirements for different animals. There will also be time for questions and comments from the audience. Panelists include Rodney Dow, Glynwood Board Member; Mary Finger, Horsemen Trail Farm; Katie Robertson, Katie’s Cold Spring Honey; Anne Symmes, HHLT Board Member; and moderator Ken Kleinpeter, Glynwood Farm.

The forum is open to the general public and free of charge, but registration is strongly recommended as space is limited. Walk-ins will be accepted on the day of the event on a space available basis. Call or email the Hudson Highlands Land Trust at 845/424-3358 or [email protected] for more information or to make a reservation.
