General News: Notes from the Cornwall Town Board

February 17, 2012

Thanks to Firefighters, First Responders

The Cornwall town board issued a resolution praising the heroic efforts of first responders who battled the blaze at the old Firth Carpet Mill on January 15, 2012.

The Cornwall town board recognized that the Highland Engine Company, Mountainville Engine Company, Storm King Engine Company, along with neighboring fire companies, put out the fire without any loss of life or serious injury. It also noted that the effort, which spanned nearly two days, was made possible with the efforts of the town police department, the emergency medical service providers, the town highway department, the Cornwall-on-Hudson water department and Orange County emergency services.

Cornwall fire chief Patrick Hines was singled out by the board for his efforts overseeing the operation.

Assessment Drop Extended

Speaking of the property that was largely destroyed in the fire at 2 Mill Street, the owners of the three parcels of land that make up the 70-acre site won an extension of their tax assessment abatement for another two years. On Monday, the town board approved a drop in assessed value from a total of $4.8 million to $600,000 for the years 2010 and 2011. In October, the board approved a similar drop in value for the years 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Holloran Road to Light Up

Residents on Holloran Road in Cornwall may be pleased to learn that the town board approved the installation of a new street lamp at the intersection of Clara Avenue and Holloran Roads in response to local residents’ complaints. The board voted unanimously for the move on Monday and will ask Central Hudson to install the light.

Grant to Town for Records Digitizing

The town of Cornwall is plugging away at its document archives and will use a $5,600 grant from the Records Management Improvement Fund of the New State Archives to digitize records from 1947 to 1969. The grant will be awarded to the office of town clerk Elaine Tilford Schneer. It’s the third year the office has received the grant, which will be used to digitize property deeds and town board meeting minutes.

Special Meeting on Wednesday
The town of Cornwall board is calling a special meeting on Wednesday, February 22 at 6 pm to decide on the insurance policy for the town.

Comments:

In regard to the assessment abatement for 2 Mill St - Maybe the rest of us need to use the same lawyers as Isaac Landau. After we sat with the assessment review board, after presenting "comps" that we provided, after explaining our point of view was that based on the comps and current real estate values we were @ $200,000 over-assessed. Form letter, several weeks later - NO reduction. Not even a tiny, little amount, even though we are assessed higher than we could ever sell our house for. Hmm.... 2 Mill St - 4 MILLION dollars reduction. Pretty interesting. It ought to infuriate every homeowner in this town who has ever gone before the Assessment Review Board to plead their case. That the Town Board has gone along with this huge reduction is UNACCEPTABLE to me.

What was the vote count? Please don't tell me the board voted unanimously for the reduction! Nancy Bryan has it right on all counts...its about the lawyers! Landau's lawyer and the REAL supervisor of Cornwall, attorney Steve Gaba. Go to a town board meeting and watch as the five of them turn in unison to look at Gaba for his 'ruling' on everything big and small. Does anyone remember casting a vote for Steve Gaba? How about Quigley's comment that was published on this website earlier that "they must have made a good argument" when asked about the reduction. Brilliant response! We need to take back our town people!
