The piles of debris dumped in Pagenstecher Park more than six years ago do not contain contaminated waste from the village’s solid waste dump, according to a report from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. What it did contain was lumber, plastic and metal mixed with rocks and soil.

The DEC dug two holes at the site to determine what had been dumped there after a resident, Jan Smith, a trustee candidate in the March election, raised her concerns about the old debris. The DEC report classifies the debris as "uncontaminated solid waste resulting from the construction, remodeling, repair and demolition of structures and roads, including concrete or asphalt."

The DEC onsite inspection did find that fallen trees trunks and limbs created sinkholes that could be a safety threat to anyone walking on the slope. DEC investigator Steven Pariso recommended that the village implement controls of dumping at the site and develop a plan to fill in the sink holes created by the decaying trees.

Village Trustee Barbara Gosda, who recalls seeing the debris when it was first dumped at the site, says she is “absolutely satisfied” with the DEC findings, though she notes that the soil itself was not tested and she would like to know that nothing is seeping out of the debris into the nearby stream.
