By Nancy Peckenham

An Orange County Grand Jury has indicted a New York City man for attempted murder after he pulled a gun on a police officer following a traffic stop in New Windsor on January 14.

The trouble started when New Windsor Police Officer James Hurley stopped a car on with three people inside, one of them a child, on Route 32 near the town’s border with the city of Newburgh. Twenty-four-year-old Jardell Ward pulled a gun on the officer after stepping outside of the car where he was a passenger. Officer Hurley then fired two shots at Ward, injuring him.

The grand jury also investigated the oficer’s actions and ruled that he was justified in the shooting.

Ward was indicted on two counts of attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing a police officer, criminal possession of stolen property, endangering the welfare of a child and false personation.
