An effort to bring drinking water to a village in Africa has motivated Cornwall dentist Thomas Stein to offer a unique tooth-whitening program that is a charitable donation as well. Dr. Stein is calling the program Whitening for Water.

Father Peter Claver-Ugoagwu of Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh started the water project for villages in his native Nigeria, a country in west Africa where millions of people have no access to clean water. By simply drilling a well, people could have fresh water.

Father Peter, as he is known to his congregants, started his project, called Water Mission Inc., by using manual labor to drill down 350 feet to find the water. He soon realized that a cable tool rig could dig a hole much more efficiently and he set out to raise the $78,450 it would cost to import a rig to the Nigerian Delta.

A Donation Can Make A Big Difference

When Dr. Stein heard about the project, he couldn’t imagine that people live in towns with no drinking water, a resource Americans seem to take for granted. He felt a personal connection with Father Peter, who also says Mass at St. Thomas’s Church in Cornwall-on-Hudson, and decided that he wanted to do his part to raise money to buy the drilling rig.

“It is a very basic and simple project and you know exactly what you are donating, what kind of impact you’re going to have,” Dr. Stein said. Under the Whitening for Water program, he is offering a professional teeth whitening for a reduced rate of $250 – and all of the money will go directly to the water charity run by Father Peter. You don’t have to be a current patient of Dr. Stein or his partner, Dr. Mark Raider, to be eligible. The program runs from April 1-June 30,2013.
