General News: Kids Speak

Georgie Poindexter at Tuesday's Meeting
Georgie Poindexter at Tuesday's Meeting
December 03, 2006

Do the young people of Cornwall have something to say? You bet they do, judging by the ever-growing numbers of teens and pre-teens who show up at the meetings of concerned residents.

Now here's a chance for these same people -- and others who are in elementary school through senior high -- to write articles for this website about what they're doing and what they are thinking, reporting on events at their schools and out in the community.

If you have an idea about a story you would like to write, please email the editor at [email protected], and you will hear back from us immediately! No idea is bad, or silly, or even impossible -- just give it a whirl.

Our first contribution, written by 11-year-old Georgie Poindexter, seeks to explain what she and some of her friends would like to see change to make the village a better place for them. Georgie, who lives in the village, has attended all three of the meetings when mostly adults talk about youth issues. Here's what she has to say:

What Do Cornwall Kids Want?

By Georgie Poindexter
I was at the town meeting last Tuesday night. We voted on whether or not we should work with the “Communities That Care” program or not. The vote was that we work with “Communities That Care” and try to make Cornwall a safer place to be.

I believe that we should work together to “makeover” the town, the kids and the adults. I took many notes during the meeting and thought we covered many topics. One topic was that a skate park is an immediate need. I half-way agree with that.

I believe that we need to focus outside of the box -- meaning that we should also focus on the punks and the people who sell drugs and all the other people who actually do things that are bad other than the skateboarders. I also agree that we should build a skate park because it is a very big need and skateboarders have no place to go to skate. I believe this is a big and wonderful opportunity.

INTERVIEW
I interviewed two fellow students in the sixth grade to see what they think. Noah, 12, is a skateboarder and Amanda,11, is very athletic. That is why I picked them to interview. I believe they both made very good choices about what to have and do.

Q: Do you have anything specific to say about what you would want in any buildings?

A: Noah says he wants popular tools and ramps in the skate park if we decide to build one.

Amanda does not care about this matter she just wants to have a place to go and hang out.

Q: Can you think of any other activity centers that would be useful in Cornwall?

Amanda: I would enjoy a Dance Alley (Recreation Center) and a dirt race track.

Noah: I would like a bowling alley, a strip mall, and a skate shop.

Q: If we possibly build a recreation center, what type of food places would you say people would like?

Both: Pizza Haven, 2 Alice’s, and Prima.
