The fire at 2 Mill Street ten days ago has brought a lot of reminisces about the Firth Carpet Mill that operated from 1886 until the early 1960s. That’s when Majestic Weaving of Paterson, N.J. bought the place and turned it into a textile dye house.

According to a posting on the Hudson River Valley Heritage site, the property ”was originally a cotton factory operated by the Townsend family. In 1869 James Broadhead bought the property and started a woolen mill. In 1886 the Firth brothers of England bought the property and started the Firth Carpet Company. The area near Firthcliffe was known as ‘Montana.’”

Some of the old-timers in Cornwall remember working at Firth Carpet and Majestic Weaving and now John Gilardo has started a Faebook page “Dedicated to the folks who lived around, worked or were some how affected by, Firth Carpet/Majestic Weaving. Cornwall NY."
