The new year is three weeks old and it looks like people in the area are still keeping to their new year’s resolutions, particularly when it comes to getting and staying in shape.

At Sportsplex, membership director Iris Hulse reports that the annual increase in activity at the health club in January has not dropped off. “People are coming in, not just to walk on the treadmill but with varied interests, like tennis and aquatics,” she said, noting that new fitness director Jay Hutchings is working out with small groups who maintain their interest in exercise because of the camaraderie it brings.

In Cornwall, Leo’s Pizzeria has introduced a new healthy salad this month that he says has become very popular. It’s called The Christine and it’s named after Christine Masterson, who coaches people on the Ideal Protein diet.

Masterson, whose office is across from Leo’s in Cornwall Plaza, said she encouraged Leo’s owner Danny Maniscalchi to create the dark greens and roasted vegetables salad so that her clients could stay on diet while eating out. Maniscalchi knows the protein and vegetable requirements of the Ideal Protein diet and can prepare several different items for diners who request it.

The new year has brought increased interest in the Ideal Protein program, which Masterson explains focuses on high-quality protein foods paired with vegetables and other low-carbohydrate foods. The goal of the program is to burn fat, not muscle, and keep it off. She did the program several years ago, losing 13 pounds and keeping it off – that’s what convinced her to become a professional Ideal Protein coach. Masterson says that once people incorporate the Ideal Protein food groups into their routine, they can maintain their weight loss for life.

Sportsplex’s Hulse is also optimistic about people maintaining their goals. She says that she often sees a drop in health club attendance in February and it bounces back in March when spring is just around the corner and folks know they will be shedding those heavy winter clothes.
