General News: Fire Still Rages Out of Control on Mill St.

At 4 pm. firefighters are still battling the blaze at the Cornwall Industrial Park that started after 10 am Sunday morning in the warehouse that was the site of the Superior Packaging Company. High winds spread the fire to adjoining buildings in the rear of the complex at 2 Mill Street in Cornwall, destroying them. The fire is now threatening the historic brick building that was the former Firth Carpet Mill and authorities on the scene now say the fire is expected to burn all night.
Surrounding neighborhoods were covered with thick dark smoke that poured out of the complex as firefighters from throughout the area tried to stop the fire from engulfing the remaining buildings. A bridge that connects the front brick building with the rear was taken down in an attempt to eliminate a route for the flames.
Bill Diamond, whose television studios and theatrical warehouse is in the brick building, said he had been told of the firefighters efforts to save his building. Other artists, including painters Andrew Lattimore, Vivien Collens and Rebecca Darlington Townsend, also have their studios near the bell tower of the former carpet mill. Other people who own businesses in the complex, including John Olley, of BBE Embroidery, and Simon Marcus, of the Simcha Candle Company, came to the scene to see if they could find out any information about their property.
Some area residents are said to have lost water service as huge quantities of water is deployed to the scene of the fire.

My husband and I watched this fire from across the creek for over two hours. There was no wind at all. Were you actually there? Just wondering where you got your information from.

The area we were watching from, across Moodna Creek from Firth Carpet, was not protected in any way. Most of the time the smoke went straight up, which would indicate to me that there was no wind. Occasionally, the smoke drifted in an easterly direction, but did not seem "strong" at any point in time.

It was windy from were I was watching.And maybe you were there at a different time.

The wind from the west was strong enough to carry debris, including several toast-sized pieces, up into my yard on Ridge Road.
