General News: County Legislator to Run for State Senate

Orange County Legislator Christopher W. Eachus, a Democrat, is running for New York State Senate, challenging long-term Republican senator William Larkin for his seat. Eachus, 56, a New Windsor resident, says that he is running to represent the 39th District, which includes most of Orange County and the eastern portion of Ulster County.

Eachus says he will focus on three main areas of reform if elected: school taxes, economic growth and unfunded mandate relief. He’d like to see state income taxes be applied to school funding, as well as programs to re-build crumbling infrastructure and to create technology jobs.

Eachus teaches physics at Newburgh Free Academy, where he works with a team of students who build solar-powered cars that compete nationally.

He is also active in veterans’ group, serving as the Orange County Commander of the Sons of the American Legion and as Vice-Commander of the New Windsor Squadron.

Eachus said he is running to make Albany work for the residents of the district. “For too long, our State representatives have been more concerned about those in State Government than the people who sent them there,” he said in a release announcing his candidacy
