General News: Water Billing System May be Re-Vamped

January 06, 2012

By Charlie B. Scirbona

Clarification:  The changes are not for customer billing but for bookkeeping purposes. Editor

The way village residents pay their water bills is set to change.

The village Board of Trustees touched briefly on the subject of changing the way residents are billed for water, garbage and sewer expenses during the budget discussion Monday. Currently the village covers all three charges in one bill.

Village Mayor Brendan Coyne said that the New York State Comptroller’s office recommended that village change its billing system so the three charges were tracked separately. He explained that the change would make it easier to track the money for each service.

Coyne added that he’s been in touch with the village attorney to proceed, but he had no idea yet as to how the changes to the water bills would be implemented.

Comments:

If changes are going to be made regarding the billing, I for one would love it if the Village could incorporate a way to pay the bills on line. Unless of course it's already available and I have missed something along the way.

I am wondering if the cost of 3 separate bills, mailing them and someone processing them has been considered? Isn't this more a question of bookkeeping?

You can be certain that sending out three separate billings will increase the cost. It is merely a bookkeeping issue and should be very simple to track. For each payment made the Treasurer merely has to separate the payment by fund...water, sewer, and general for garbage. If deposits are made timely it should not be an issue.

Not only would it be more costly to send three bills, it would also be an inconvenience for those of us who pay them. I would like to be able to go directly to the village site online, have secure storage of credit card info, click a button and pay. Think Amazon.com.
