General News: Councilman Criticizes Sewer Deal

January 04, 2012

By Charlie B. Scirbona

During the Town Board work session Tuesday, board member Al Mazzocca spoke out against the town’s contract with Camo Pollution Control Inc., which was put in charge of the sewer treatment plant at the end of last year.

Mazzocca read a prepared statement asking for a re-vote so he could vote against the contract. He also spoke about his concerns about the contract and the job status of the employees at the town’s sewage treatment plant.

“I don’t see any appreciable savings, we’re giving Camo the Sewer Department’s vehicles and tools and last but not least, we are not doing justice to two town employees I thought were being taken care of.”

Mazzocca also blasted a letter from Camo that left the status of Sewer Plant Manger Donald Van Leuven’s employment up-in-the air.

“In plain English it says ‘Don, give up your existing seniority, benefits, etc., and maybe we will hire you, if in our opinion, you are qualified. If we do hire you, there will be no guarantee that you will stay with us for any length of time’,” Mazzocca said. He ended his statement by making a motion to rescind the December 19 vote that approved the contract with Camo and hold a re-vote. The motion went through, however, the vote failed with only Mazzocca and Board Member Randy Clark voting yes.
