Local residents filled the village square on Saturday night just before midnight to mark the end of one year and the beginning of a new one.

The balmy weather brought out a crowd, who came to greet friends and neighbors, rattle noisemakers and celebrate the arrival of 2012.

Elvis impersonator Sebastian Damico was back this year, though he abandoned the deck on the roof of the Storm King Theater to perform on street level, moving in and out of the crowd as he sang along with old Elvis tunes.

In a sign of the times, one man held a sign reading Occupy Hudson Street. Kurt Schreiber said he made the sign as a lark, thinking it would be funny to see the slogan amid a crowd in the village square.

Shortly before midnight, the Mayor of Cornwall-on-Hudson, Brendan Coyne, began the countdown and, for the second year in a row, a sparkling ball descended from the top of the Storm King Fire Engine Company’s ladder truck and the numbers 2012 lit up.

With the arrival of the new year, people kissed, hugged and called and texted their friends and family, celebrating the beginning of a new year, a clean slate and endless possibilities for 2012.

Comments:

It was a great way to celebrate the New Year and a tradition that we have some to enjoy and look forward to. A great big thank you to all involved in getting it together and for the many volunteers. My only concern goes out to the owners of the Trestle Restaurant who did not have their back parking lot lit which may have prevented the loud fight that took place at 130am. We who happen to live right next door to the restaurant are concerned that security was nonexistent and what will happen next year?

I,m sorry to hear that the events of new years eve left you with concerns. Our security staff was present and was also instrumental in keeping that same situation under control. In the future as in the past security is something we take seriously and will continue to do so.
