What were the big stories that attracted the most attention in 2011?

Well, this year one event completely dominated, with record numbers of viewers reading dozens of pages about the episode and its impact. The interest in this story was so high that an entire article will be dedicated to it in the next edition of this newsletter.

For now, we will focus on the other top stories of 2011, starting with the second most viewed one.

2. Fire Destroys Clearwaters Frame Gallery.
The popular, family-owned frame gallery on Jones Farm, right next to the food and gift shop that has attracted generations of local residents and visitors, suffered an early morning fire on March 15 that engulfed the wood frame building. Thanks to a quick response from the Cornwall fire department the blaze was extinguished before the entire building burned down and the frame shop re-opened some six months later.

3. Customers Say Local Store Duped Them.
A new store on Main Street selling Iphone accessories and offering computer repair left a lot of customers out in the cold last Christmas when the items ordered never appeared and others left for repair could not be found by the owner. The store owner shut the store down when angry customers appeared and, through the intervention of the Cornwall police some items were returned to their owners.

4. Cornwall Woman Dies in Accident.
When a well-respected professor at Mount Saint Mary College died after a freak automobile accident in the driveway of her Cornwall home, more than two thousand readers came to the learn about the tragic circumstances that took her life.

5. Coyne Wins Village Mayor’s Race.

Last March the election of Brendan Coyne as Mayor of Cornwall-on-Hudson attracted a lot of attention in an article that also recounted the amazingly close race among candidates for village trustee.

6. Sparks Fly Over Village Debris from 2005.
Many readers were curious about the issue raised in December at a village board meeting about the Department of Environmental Conservation looking into how debris from the Shore Road site of the Department of Public Works building was disposed of on public land in 2005. The article is accompanied by photos of the debris piles.

7, Trestle Restaurant Opens to Good Crowd.
Cornwall readers are always interested in a new restaurant, and when the Trestle opened up in the former Storm King Theater in the village, they flocked to read about the new place.

8. Hikers Rescued from Icy Mountain.
A treacherous rescue of two men on snowshoes from the ice-covered slopes of Storm King Mountain by area rescue teams from the fire and ambulance departments provided a glimpse of the dangers many faced last winter, when conditions led to multiple rescues in dangerous conditions of snow and ice.

9. Gunshots, Fire Lead to Arrests on Mountain.
Storm King Mountain was back in the news in November, after nearby residents heard gunshots and saw a fire on the mountainside and police searched the wooded mountainside for hours to locate the suspects.

Senior Prom-Goers Take Over Riverfront.
A chance to see Cornwall High School seniors dressed in beautiful gowns and handsome tuxedos as they posed along the banks of the Hudson River brought visitors to this story about the annual tradition.

Hard to imagine the Rossi story didnt make the list...it must be #1. And ironically, what was never mentioned in any Cornwall coverage was the similar incident Rossi was involved in when in Hastings.
