General News: Ball Drop to Return for New Year's Eve

December 21, 2011

By Charlie B. Scirbona

The annual New Years ball drop will happen December 31, with the owners of the Trestle Restaurant taking the reigns of the event.

Trestle Co-owner Jim Imperallia confirmed Wednesday the restaurant will host the festivities in the village square this New Year’s Eve. He said that right now there would be a DJ in the restaurant who hopefully will broadcast the music outside but he hadn’t finalized any other plans. In previous years the entertainment for the ball drop included an Elvis impersonator and a comedian.

“I’m really not looking to change anything, I just want to keep the tradition alive,”  said Imperallia.

Last year the ball drop was in danger of ending when Ray Yannone, owner of the building that houses the Trestle, decided the effort far outweighed the benefit of manufacturing and dropping the shining ball. However, a group of 19 volunteers led by Kris Seiz, who was part of the original group that started the ball drop in 2001, took up the task with the help of the ladder truck from Storm King Fire Engine Company #2.

Yannone said he and his son are working to get the ball cleaned up, and will help Imperallia with the drop this year. He added that the ball would probably still be dropped with the help of the fire department’s bucket truck, and not back on top of the building.
