General News: Young Readers Raise Funds for Heifer

December 06, 2011

A group of young readers at Cornwall Public Library raised money by reading this summer and are donating it to purchase animals that will be raised by needy families worldwide.

Many of the young participants in Cornwall Public Library’s 2011 Summer Reading Program,“One World Many Stories,” got involved in Heifer® International’s Read to Feed Program with the help of the Friends of Cornwall Public Library.

Read to Feed is a reading incentive service-learning program that offers global education opportunities and fosters in your children a love for reading, a passion to help others and a way to help create a better world. Children get sponsors for each book they read and, at the end of the program, the group pools its funds and donates them to Heifer® International to assist millions of families around the world feed their families and reach self-reliance through the gifts of livestock and training.

As a result of their efforts, coupled with an additional contribution from The Friends of Cornwall Public Library, $120 was raised. On Election Day, patrons were invited to vote for their choice of gifts to be donated with monies raised. They selected a rabbit trio, honeybees, a flock of chicks, and a share of tree seedlings.

In the letter to Heifer® International that accompanied the check for $120, Liz Fisher (Youth Services Librarian) and Jane Harkinson (President, Friends of the Library) thanked Heifer for the opportunity to share with our children the importance of giving through Read to Feed, saying, “It meshed beautifully with the One World Many Stories 2011 summer reading program theme.”
