General News: Cornwall Reminds Residents About Bulk Pickup

December 06, 2011

By Charlie B. Scirbona

The Cornwall Town Board is trying to find a way to make residents aware of its new bulk pickup procedures.

During the Town Board’s monthly work session Monday, highway and sanitation department superintendant Robert Conley asked the board members to find a better way to spread the word about the new procedure for bulk pickup.

Earlier in the year the town decided to do away with its bi-yearly bulk pickup in favor of having residents call Conley to schedule a pick up.

Conley said that the residents who had gone through the new process liked it, but that he and town code enforcement officer and building inspector Gary Vinson had been hearing about people simply leaving large piles of debris or furniture by the curb without calling for a pickup.

The board debated how to deal with the issue and decided that as a start it would send out notices about the new way to get bulk trash picked up with the next tax bill receipts. They also explained that simply leaving large pieces of trash by the curb is a violation of the town code.

To schedule a bulk pick up call the Town Highway Garage at 534-2171 or e-mail [email protected]. For more information on what can and can’t be picked up visit www.cornwallny.com.

It was really nice to have a bulk pickup twice a year. Items got recycled and you only had to look at the big garbage on the curb twice a year. Now, its all the time someone has bulk pickup items out somewhere in the Town! What were you thinking? And now you are saying its a violation if you put stuff out without calling? Give it up - clean up out town - go back to bulk pickup and keep Cornwall looking clean.

It does seem kind of silly, on the face of it, to eliminate a pick-up where trucks go out and pick up everything at the same time on two set days, rather than going out every time someone calls for a bulk pickup. I can't imagine how the current method could be more efficient and cost effective than what was done in the past (perhaps someone did a thorough cost benefit analysis, though). If anything they should cut it down to one pick-up day a year if they have to because of costs, but still do it all at the same time.

The other thing that has been lost is having a set day for people to drive around and look for things that can still be used. I always thought it was great to see people exemplifying the adage that one person's trash is another person's treasure.

Reduce, re-use, recycle
