General News: New Headmaster at Storm King School

Paul Domingue will be the 16th headmaster of Storm King School.
November 22, 2011

The Storm King School in Cornwall-on-Hudson has appointed a new headmaster who will start next July. After an extensive search, the school’s chairman announced the selection of Paul C. Domingue to serve as the 16th headmaster of the school, which was founded in 1867.

Domingue comes to Storm King School from Verde Valley School in Sedona, Arizona, where he served as Headmaster for eight years. Prior to that he was the director of development and interim Headmaster at Hebron Academy in Maine. With 35 years of experience as an educator, Domigue has been a teacher, coach, department chair, dorm parent, and curriculum specialist before rising to headmaster.

The hiring of Domingue to take over running the school from current Headmaster Steevie Chinitz, who is retiring at the end of June, resulted from what the school describes as an extensive search. Forty-three applicants were considered and, with the guidance of a consulting firm, a group of trustees and an advisory committee of alumni, parents and students they whittle down their choices. Trudy Hammer, the associate head of the Emma Williard School Emerita, also assisted the decision process.

One of the top considerations, school officials say, was to find a headmaster who could lead the school as it prepares to mark its 150th anniversary in 2017. There are approximately 135 students currently enrolled at The Storm King School, 75% boarding and 25% day students. The School enrolls students from 10 states and 16 countries, grades 8 through 12.

As Headmaster Chinitz begins to wrap up her tenure at the school, Peter Duggan, the chairman of the school board is also stepping down. Duggan, whose father served as school chairman before him, has sold his house that abuts the Storm King School and he and his wife, MaryVance, will become part-time residents, making their permanent home in Florida.
