The Crucible, a modern play about the fear of witchcraft in 17th-century Salem, Massachusetts, is being tackled by the Cornwall Central High School Drama Club, which presents the dramatic performance this Thursday and Saturday.

Drama club director Rich Aufiero says that he wanted to do a serious and substantive production with the students, who shared his interest in The Crucible. Aufiero knew that Arthur Miller’s play is challenging to the best of stage actors but he decided to give it a shot. “I am delighted I did, “ Aufiero said following a dress rehearsal earlier this week. “The cast, crew and production staff have done a phenomenal job. “

Aufiero also believes that since many students read “The Crucible” in 10th grade that they will bring their own appreciation for the story to inspire their acting. He also hopes that more students will attend this year’s fall production, which he said, has always had difficulty attracting the audience size they get for the big musical production in the spring.

The play itself was viewed as a criticism of the McCarthy era of the 1950s, when finger-pointing and fear ruined the careers of many in the arts and academia. In this dramatic play, one young woman, Abigail Williams (played by Lea Pandoliano) may be hiding her own sins when she leads other young women to accuse older women of practicing witchcraft. Some members of the community try to defend their wives or like, John Proctor (played by Dante Giannetta) reveal their own failings in order to save their loved ones. The church, embodied by Reverand Parris (Craig Franke) and government, the Deputy Governor (Brian Barrows) decide the fate of the accused, championing a strict moral code.

The cast of The Crucible highlights the acting abilities of many dedicated Drama students, who are coached by Director Aufiero to show more emotions, from longing to fear of condemnation. The language, the costumes, the inflexibility of Puritan New England created on stage will help transport you back to an earlier era where you will find surprisingly familiar human traits.

Ably assisting Aufiero are students Sarah Goldfrank-Cariot and Grace Amnott. Tony Ravinsky, designed the stark and eerie set. Corinne Aufiero served as assistant director, Meaghan Doulin, stage manager; Nancy Brennan, producer, and Karen Eremin, costume designer.

Performance times are 7pm on Thursday, November 10, and 2pm and 7pm on Saturday, November 12. Tickets are $5.00 for seniors and students, and $7.00 for general admission and are available at the door.

Cornwall Central High School is located at 10 Dragon Drive in New Windsor

Comments:

Rich Aufiero does a wonderful job with these kids and you forget you are at a High School Play. Well done to everyone and I hope the community comes out to see this powerful play.
