General News: Music of the Baroque Period

November 04, 2011

From the Cornwall Public Library-

On Sunday, November 20th, Cornwall Public Library will present the first of three in their concert series, “Music of the Renaissance & Baroque Periods”. The program will feature The Four Nations Ensemble, an internationally known group of musicians who have developed a leading presence on the early music scene in New York and across the country. The concert will take place at 3:00 p.m. in the Storm King School Theater located at 314 Mountain Road in Cornwall-on-Hudson. The public is invited, and there is no cost to attend. Advance reservations are required, in person or by phone (845) 534-8282.

Founded in 1986, The Four Nations Ensemble brings together soloists who are leading exponents of period instrument and vocal performance to present great music from the Renaissance through the Viennese Classical masterpieces of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. With a core ensemble of harpsichord or fortepiano, violin(s), and cello, the Ensemble explores and performs the major masterpieces of the 17th and 18th centuries, from trio sonata to piano trio and quartet. Four Nations has performed at major houses and series throughout the United States including The Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center. The Ensemble has participated in festivals including The Boston Early Music Festival, New York’s Mostly Mozart, Amherst Festival, New Haven’s International Festival of Arts & Ideas, Virginia Waterfront International Arts Festival, Chautauqua, The Indiana Early Music Festival, The Redwoods Festival in Santa Rosa, California, and Brasilseguridade in Rio de Janeiro.

The next event, a program of Renaissance Lute Music, will feature Eric Roth on Lute. It will take place on Friday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Library’s community room. Please register in advance in person, or by phone – 845-534-8282.

Both concerts are part of the grant-funded Music of the Renaissance and Baroque Periods series that will be presented by the Library. The series is made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts' Decentralization Program administered by Arts in Orange. The Program is funded, in part, by Orange County Tourism and the County of Orange, and is partially funded by a generous contribution from the Friends of the Cornwall Public Library.

For more information about either concert or the library’s Music of the Renaissance & Baroque Periods concert series, contact Rosaleen Leahy at the library: 534-8282 or [email protected].
