An alert firefighter from the Mountainville Fire Engine Company acted quickly Wednesday afternoon when he smelled smoke while driving down Route 32. Captain Matt Stack found the fire after he began looking for the source of the smoke odor shortly before 4 pm. He found the smoke coming out of a bungalow at 27 Paradise Hill and alerted the fire department.

Cornwall Fire Chief Pat Hines said that water had to be pumped up from Route 32 because there are no fire hydrants in the area and the firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze within 12 minutes of getting the call. Pump trucks from Woodbury, Cornwall-on-Hudson and Salisbury Mills provided mutual aid, along with a FAST team from Vails Gate.

Hines says that the fire appeared to be power related following the restoration of electricity to the area about two hours before it started.

No one was home at the time of the fire and the bungalow is not habitable due to extensive damage in the kitchen and roof area, he said
