Victims of sexual assault will now have a place to go to in eastern Orange County following the opening of a new service at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital’s Cornwall campus. SLCH has a team of nurses specially trained in examining victims of sexual assault and a private examination room with equipment required for a forensic rape exam. Prior to the opening of the Cornwall
location, victims had to travel outside of the community for proper examination and treatment.

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program was brought to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (SLCH) in partnership with the Orange County District Attorney’s office and the Orange County Mental Health Association, Rape Crisis. The St. Luke’s Cornwall Auxiliary donated the funds necessary to purchase a Colposcope, a necessary tool for examining rape and sexual abuse victims.

“It is important for assaulted or abused victims to know they are never alone,” said Dr. Meika Roberson, Assistant Emergency Department Director at SLCH. “The SANE program provides victims with the compassionate treatment and care needed at an extremely crucial time.”

At the unveiling of the new service on October 5, attendees took part in the painting of a mural to be displayed in the examination room. The painting is meant to have a calming effect for patients visiting the room.

St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (SLCH), a Clinical Affiliate of the Mount Sinai Hospital, is a not-for-profit community hospital with campuses in Newburgh and Cornwall, NY. The hospital is dedicated to serving the health care needs of the Hudson Valley and aspires to excellence in the delivery of quality, compassionate healthcare services.
