General News: Bridge Repairs Edging Closer

The Cornwall town board approved funding and the creation of bid documents for repairs to the closed stone bridge on Bridge Street, Monday.

The approval of the funding, a bond for a maximum of $80,000, didn’t require any public hearing because the town intends to repay the money within five years. The repairs will only make the bridge ready for foot traffic and will include improvements to the drainage near the bridge as well as repairs to the roadway and a wall that partially collapsed.

The bridge has remained closed since 2007, when the state Department of Transportation found leaks and cracks in the walls to be a potential hazard. The bridge was originally built in 1871.

Comments:

This is good news. Am I the only one who is actually pleased that the bridge will only be open to pedestrian traffic? Broadway at the traffic circle and Willow Ave already provide adequate routes for cars to the neighborhood north of the creek, and a pedestrian-friendly area like this could actually find multiple uses for events or businesses while helping to foster a more walkable/livable Main Street
