Thursday’s rain storms, which started in the early morning hours with thunder, lightening and torrential rains, wreaked havoc throughout the day. At noon, the state Department of Transporation closed down Route 218 from the village to West Point, noting that the road would be closed for approximately seven days.

While closure of the state road that winds around Storm King Mountain is not unusual, the flooding doesn’t happen that frequently.

Charlie Scirbona, of News from Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson, walked up the road mid-afternoon and saw water rushing down the gully on the side of the roadway and then spilling across the road itself.

Brendan Davis, a junior of Cornwall Central High School, was on the road about the same time, and he climbed up on the rocks to get a photo of a waterfall that had been created by the runoff, as well as more shots of the water along the roadway.

Both photographers said they had to flee the area when the dark clouds rolled in again, repeating a pattern that occurred throughout the day of remarkably heavy rain followed by a burst of blue skies and sunshine.

The road closure isn't expected to stop Sunday's River View Run, according to one of it's organizers, Ellen Kelly.  She said that the DOT told her the race could go on as scheduled.  If there is a problem, the Kelly family has mapped out another route through Cornwall-on-Hudson that promises some equally challenging hills and beautiful views.
