General News: Runoff Causes Flooding for Village Resident

September 23, 2011

By Charlie B. Scirbona

A village resident stepped up at the village board business meeting Monday with the hope that trustees would take action on flooding caused by water running off the street into his yard.

Brian Sweeney spoke to the board during the public comment period of the meeting in regard to how his property on Hudson Street is flooded during rain storms because of run off from Willis Avenue. He explained that when he moved to the village ten years ago he had to sign an easement for a drain to be put in his yard by the village, but found that the drain is not enough for the amount of water that ends up in the yard.

“Even in medium-to-heavy rains we have the drain overflow and the water goes into my basement,” said Sweeney He added that because the drain is insufficient the water is left to sit in his backyard where it becomes stagnant. Sweeny has previously written several times to the board about the situation.

In response to Sweeney’s plea for action, Trustee Andrew Argenio made a motion for the village engineer to inspect Sweeney’s property to see what could be done. The motion passed unanimously. Sweeney added that he wanted to bring in his own engineer as well.
