General News: Longinott, Clark Ahead in Primary Vote Count

September 13, 2011

Elizabeth Longinott, the former town of Cornwall receiver of taxes, garnered the most votes in Tuesday’s Republican primary election to choose two candidates for the town board, according to unofficial results.

Cornwall town clerk Elaine Tilford Schneer reports that the other two candidates in the three-way race for the town board are just two votes apart, with 15 absentee ballots still to be counted.

The clerk’s office counted 209 votes for incumbent council member Randy Clark and 207 votes for incumbent council member J. Kerry McGuinness ,while Longinott received 222 votes

Schneer said that the absentee ballots will be counted “in about a week.”

All three candidates are expected to appear on the November ballot, whatever the final outcome of the Republican primary. Clark has also filed with the Cornwall First Party, while McGuinness is backed by both the Conservative and Independence Party and Longinott is backed by the Conservative Party.

Asked about the results of the primary vote, Longinott said she was disappointed by the "very, very poor showing of people.  There are 3,095 registered Republicans eligible to vote in Tuesday's primary in Cornwall.
