The new school year opened on Wednesday with 3, 431 students from all over the district venturing to school in the rain, traveling on foot, by bus, or driven by car.

Last week’s flooding in the Mountainville area created the only disruption to the smooth transition back to school. When the bridge on Pleasant Hill Road was washed out, bus routes had to be re-drawn at the last minute, with a small bus making the run for students in that area.

At Breeze Hill Road and Pleasant Hill, Genevieve and Katarina Daly were making their first trip on a school bus to an American school. The sisters recently returned from living abroad in Singapore and they were cheerful about the chance they would have to meet new friends at Cornwall Elementary School.

Genevieve had met her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Osborn, during orientation the day before and said that she was “very nice.”

As they waited for the bus, which arrived nearly 20 minutes behind schedule for this first-day pick-up, another family arrived at the bus stop. Chitra Raval, age five, was also headed to kindergarten, along with her brother Keshav and cousin Prahlad, both entering the second grade. Keshav said he was excited about going to school “because you get to do fun things on the playground.”

This year, enrollment in the Cornwall school district has dropped slightly, by a total of six students in all five schools. Superintendent Timothy Rehm said he had visited all of the schools except the high school during the morning and found everything working well. “Kids were happy, teachers were energetic,” he said. It was great to be back.”
