General News: Cornwall Slowly Recovers from Hurricane Irene

Hurricane Irene proved the power of nature on Sunday as the storm knocked out bridges and electrical power, tore huge chunks of pavements from the roads and sent creeks flooding over their banks throughout Cornwall and the region. No one was seriously hurt by the driving rains and winds that began in earnest near midnight on Saturday night and continued through the late morning but plenty of property damage could be seen as the flood waters continued to rise throughout the day.

Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard said problems really started to mount after the storm started to move out around 10 am, when the churning waters of a swollen Canterbury Creek leaped from their banks near Chadeayne Circle, flooding the traffic circle and barreling down the middle of Main Street. Police evacuated residents from Hasbroucke Avenue and set up an emergency shelter at Cornwall Elementary School at Lee Road, which remained open for several hours before closing because of limited demand.

Meanwhile, Moodna Creek was soon enveloping the streets and roads on the outskirts of town and virtually cut residents off from traveling in and out of town. The force of the waters damaged the steel bridge on Route 32 and further south, Woodbury creek flooded the roadway, leading authorities to shut the state road in both directions. The bridge was re-opened at 6:30 pm

On Route 9W the bridge over Moodna Creek was closed, stopping traffic in both directions. Chief Hazard said that fallen trees had been pushed up against the bridge, creating a dam that sent water over the bridge. At 6:30 pm, he said that authorities may be able to re-open it later in the evening.

One bridge that will not be re-opening any time soon is that one on Forge Hill Road. Hazard said the Moodna waters damaged the structure beyond repair.

After the rain stopped, the winds picked up in the late afternoon with strong gusts through 11 pm.

Residents in the Duncan Avenue and Weeks Estate area of the village on Cornwall-on-Hudson lost power around noon and it was restored at 4 pm. Another 6,000 Central Hudson customers in Cornwall weren’t as lucky and still had no power by the end of the day. Central Hudson, which reported that 90,000 of its customers throughout the region had lost power, cautioned residents to stay away from downed power lines.

Comments:

does anyone know if the 9W bridge over Moodna Creek has re-opened?

Also, if you're interested, my Husband just traveled through the northern part of the Palisades Pkwy where it had been recently re-opened from a mud slide and downed trees. It is still being reported closed.

Thank you Nancy, and your staff for such great coverage. The Pleasant Hill Road bridge is out, as well as flooding on Taylor and Otterkill Road. The area around butterhill is devastated. It is simply amazing, and my heart goes out to those without power, and flooded out
