General News: Prepare Now for Hurricane Irene

August 25, 2011

From Kurt Hahn, Cornwall's Director of Emergency Management

Our community emergency response agencies are planning and making preparations as Hurricane Irene is predicted to impact our region over the weekend. Please monitor weather updates very closely. Many residents will remember the destruction caused by Floyd and that was only a tropical storm when it impacted our region. We have not experienced a significant impact by a Hurricane in many years and residents should anticipate moderate damage to our region.

I urge residents to prepare now for the possible impact by planning for extensive flooding, downed trees, extensive power outages, structural damage and limited if no cellular and telephone service.

A few items that you should have available include non-perishable food items, at least one gallon of water per person for five-to-seven days, adequate supply of medication, cash on hand, important documents sealed in water tight containers, flashlights or lanterns instead of candles, a battery-operated radio for weather updates, and remove outdoor furniture that could become airborne. Unless ordered to evacuate, we request that you shelter in your home during the hurricane, limit travel to emergency traffic only, do not drive through flooded roads, watch for falling trees, flying debris and downed power lines.

Don't forget to consider preparing your pet for the storm by having sufficient supplies available. If you are using a generator during a power outage, please be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide and ensure exhaust is adequately ventilating.

Please take photos of flooding and damage in your neighborhood to help provide support for any disaster assistance funding and as a historical record of storm damage in our community. You can email your photos to [email protected] or drop them off to the Town or Village Hall.

Thank you for this Kurt! Job well done!

A couple of things I would purely personally add to the above excellent summary:

If you customarily park your car somewhere that's under trees, find somewhere else to leave it that's as far as possible from falling branches or, worse yet, falling trees.

Fill your bathtub with water, after duct-taping the drain closed just to assure that there isn't slow leakage. There will almost certainly be power outages, and you're not primarily going to drink or cook with this water, but you'll sure want some water to flush toilets by Day Three...

Forgot to mention that the bathtub-filling is primarily for those who have wells, not municipal water, which I assume keeps flowing. (I've always had a well.)
