A ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday afternoon marked the official opening of a new ambulatory surgery and endoscopy unit at the Newburgh campus of St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital. The new unit features a minor procedure section, endoscopy rooms, and recovery rooms for patients who have same-day surgery at the hospital. A separate recovery room for pediatric patients is also available. SLCH also offers an ambulatory care unit at the Cornwall campus of the hospital.

Allan E. Atzrottt, SLCH President and CEO, officiated at the ribbon-cutting ceremony where he was joined by state senator William Larkin, Doug Hovey, who serves as president of the hospital board, local business leaders and hospital staff. He noted that the ambulatory surgery unit is part of a $125 million, 10-year facilities plan which is nearing completion. In coming weeks, he said, a newly-renovated lobby and laboratory will be officially inaugurated.

When it came time to cut the ribbon, the giant-sized scissors failed to do the job, but that didn’t slow down the ceremony. One of the doctors, Jonathan Fugo, a plastic surgeon who recently opened his practice at the Cornwall campus of the hospital, reached into the pocket of his white coat and handed Atzrott his surgical scissors, with which he promptly snipped through the ribbon.
