State Senator Bill Larkin, a Republican from Cornwall-on-Hudson, is going to bat for a fellow veteran who was highly decorated and held prisoner of war during World War II.

Larkin nominated William Stratis, of New Windsor, to the New York State Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame in Albany.

"His dedication to the veterans of the Hudson Valley, coupled with the sacrifices he made during his time in the military, make him an outstanding addition to the Hall of Fame and an inspiration to all," Larkin said in a release announcing the nomination.

Larkin said that while Stratis was serving in the US Army in Germany he was captured and taken as a prisoner of war while in Germany and was held for over two months. Stratis was wounded twice and received the Purple Heart for his injuries. He was also awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star for his actions during the War.

After serving two years, and achieving the rank of Sergeant, Mr. Stratis was discharged from the Army. He is a member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War organization and studied to become a Certified National Service Officer. Has been volunteering five days a week at Castle Point Veteran's Hospital for many years helping to process claims for veterans and their spouses. Every year, over four million dollars goes to the families he has assisted through his volunteer work at Castle Point, Larkin said.

"I applaud Bill Stratis and his commitment to our veterans and their families," said Senator Larkin. "He has done so much for his community and I am honored to call him a friend."
