Al Snider and Rich Aufiero will appear in Lend Me A Tenor.
July 13, 2011

Picture yourself relaxing in the cool shade of a tent, sipping chilled white wine and chatting with your friends. Then, the lights come up on stage and the Vineyard Comedy Players take their places for the start of the lively farce, Lend Me Your Tenor.  The audience chatter stops and tour attention is drawn by the familiar faces that local theatre aficionados have come to love. Rich Aufiero, the acclaimed director of the Cornwall Central High School Drama Club, not only directs many of his former star performers but appears himself in this comedy that opens this Thursday and runs for four nights at Palaia Vineyards.

Alex Hauserman, Allison Theis, Al Snider, Ann Marie Maloney, Daniel Distasio, Kara Greevy and Sherrie House join Aufiero in this comedic masterpiece by Ken Ludwig that garnered seven Tony award nominations.  It tells the tale of a famous Italian tenor, Tito Merilli, who is scheduled to sing the lead in Othello. Unfortunately, even before the star leaves his hotel room, everything begins to unravel. Chaos ensues when Merelli’s wife, who has mistaken an autograph-seeker hidden in his closet for a secret lover, leaves him a “Dear John” letter. The distraught Merelli (played by Aufiero) accidentally is given a double dose of tranquilizers to calm him, and passes out.

Saunders, the company’s General Manager, is determined that the show will go on, so he asks his assistant, Max, to impersonate the opera star. Max (played by Hauserman) puts on the required makeup for the role of Othello, and his disguise succeeds admirably – until another Othello unexpectedly appears. What follows is a chain-reaction of mistaken identity, plot twists, double entendres, innuendoes, and constant entrances and exits through many doors….in other words….farce at its finest.

The curtain rises on the main stage of the vineyards outdoor property at 8 pm each night. Tickets are $10. Palaia Vineyards is located at 10 Sweet Clover Road, Highland Mills, NY 10930. Call 845-928-5384 for more information.
