General News: Bikers and Hikers Enjoy Route 218 Opening

Walkers and bikers turned out in large numbers under cloudless blue skies on Sunday for the first Route 218 Hike and Bike. Following a request from the Town of Highlands Green Committee and the Trustees of Cornwall-on-Hudson, the Department of Transportation agreed to close the state highway for eight Sundays from 11 am to 3 pm, beginning July 10th.
Several volunteers organized by Trustees Barbara Gosda and Andrew Argenio, greeted people who drove up to the closed gate on Route 218 and they were asked to turn around or park and walk from that point.
Less than an hour and a half into the closing of the road, Trustee Gosda said about 100 people had taken advantage of the opportunity to walk the winding road with spectacular views up and down the Hudson River. Many of them were local residents, she said, but some came from Warwick and Beacon, among other locations. She was collecting the email addresses of people as they entered the gate in order to stay in touch.

Though, as a motorcycle rider, I'm a little jealous of that piece of road, the weather was perfect and we found quite a few happy people (and dogs!) out there walking and biking between 2:15 and 3 PM.
Will it have the desired economic benefit? Only time will tell. But thanks to Trustees Argenio and Gosda, and to Bob Smith, who was out there standing in front of oncoming vehicles, for their time in making the event run smoothly.

What a great thing to finally happen in our community. It's an idea that's been talked about for many years, and thanks to trustees Barbara Gosda and Andrew Argenio who led this initiative it's now a reality.
They say the simple pleasures are the best, and to open this exquisite road to hikers and bikers for a few hours each summer weekend will, no doubt, be enthusiastically embraced by a community that knows a thing or two about the joys of walking, biking, and just generally getting out there in this great place. Also, what a nice cooperative thing to do with our neighbors to the south in the Town of Highlands.
We seem to need to measure things economically to determine their success and/or validity. I think this was such a positive experience for most people who took advantage, that simple word-of-mouth will open this up to a healthy-sized crowd. Many will, no doubt, stop for a snack or a meal afterwards.
