Jim Impallaria wasn’t intending to open a restaurant when first saw what is now the Trestle Restaurant.

Impallaria said he first laid eyes on the building that was previously Drew’s on The Square on Idlewild Avenue in Cornwall-on-Hudson when he was brought in to do some work earlier in the year. Impallaria is also a plumber. While he was there the building’s owner said the space was up for sale.

“I called up John (Braunagel, his partner) and one thing lead to another, and here we are,” Impallaria explained this week.

Impallaria said he and his partner had done work in the area before and thought the opportunity to open a restaurant in the village was too good to pass up.

“I’ve been here a bunch, but I never got to be part of the community,” said Impallaria. “I’m hoping to now.”

Trestle opened Tuesday with a crowd of around 50 people.

“Our first night went really well, I was surprised by how many people we had,” said Impallaria.

The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and sports a family-friendly menu that includes burgers, sandwiches, salmon and steaks. For people just looking for to relax with friends there is the bar and lounge area. Impallaria said he’s hoping to have outside dining, but that he and his partner are waiting from approval by the village.

John Hembree, a New Windsor resident, showed up for the opening night Tuesday and said he liked what he saw.

“It’s not too fancy, it’s definitely got a more home-style atmosphere,” said Hembree. “I dig it.”
