A Cornwall-on-Hudson girl launched her professional acting career this weekend with a leading role in Jackass Flats, an original production at the Shadowland Theatre in Ellenville.

Amelia Rose Allen, the daughter of Rose Tamberino and Alan Douches, is only nine-years-old but she already presents herself with the accomplished air of a pro, speaking smartly and thoughtfully about her emerging success on stage. Her voice teacher, Tina Cody, has worked with her since she was six and encouraged Amelia as she went from school productions and community theatre to being represented by a talent management company based in New York and Los Angeles.

For the past two weeks, Amelia has been auditioning for major professional productions and is being considered for the role of young Fiona in a national tour of Shrek and as Jane in another tour of Mary Poppins. A student at the Hudson Hills school in New Windsor, Amelia says that if she gets either of those roles she will have a tutor that travels with the production and keeps all the young actors up-to-date with their studies.

In the production of Jackass Flats, which had its world debut this weekend and runs through July 10, Amelia is one of three actors. The other two play her aunt and her mother and the play follows the trio as they take a road trip out west where they discover new dimensions to their relationships. It’s a comedy and Amelia says that she likes comedies because you get an instant reaction from the audience. “I love to play funny roles because I get a lot of laughs from the audience,” she said recently.

When asked how she prepares for her role as Lana Dee, Amelia thought for a moment then shared some secrets. “I feel like Lana Dee is my little friend sitting over there and I get advice from her,” she said. Amelia says she wrote down a list of the character’s favorite color, favorite food to create a real person in her mind.

Amelia’s mother, Rose Tamberino, has had a career in radio and voice-overs and her talent has clearly rubbed off on her daughter. But Rose also bubbles with youthful innocence and excitement that could take her far.
