General News: Notes from the Village Board

June 22, 2011

By Charlie B. Scirbona

The village Board of Trustees passed a slew of resolutions Monday, including allowing a letter of intent to be sent to Taylor Biomass while the village attorney reviews the contract.

Letter of Intent to Waste Recycler

A representative from Taylor Biomass met with the board last week to outline a proposal for the company to take the village’s organic and inorganic waste at their gasification plant in Montgomery. The company set a short window of opportunity for the village by setting an end-of-the-month deadline. Trustee Mark Edsall said that while the offer from Taylor looked good at face value they didn’t want to sign an agreement without the village attorney’s approval. The company is offering to take the village’s waste at $66 a ton versus the current deal with the county for $80

Residency Law Set for Public Hearing

The board also passed a resolution introducing a law that would do away with the residency requirement for the village building inspector position. The new law would allow the hiring of anyone from Orange county or any of the adjoining counties as long as the person lived within 30 linear miles from the village. A public hearing for the proposed change in the law is scheduled for July 18 at 7 pm. Along with this resolution the board passed another to allow the mayor to sign off on another 90-day agreement with the town for building inspector services

Two More Resolutions Passed

The other resolutions passed during the meeting included an agreement with Nuggent and Haussler to conduct financial audits, a resolution to ratify the contract from 2009 for the walkabilitity study done by McLaren Engineering Group and a resolution naming Stantec Engineering as the village Engineer.

Summer Playground Details Reported

Trustee Barbara reported to the board that the annual summer playground for village and town children is set to begin on July 5 and run to August 12. Gosda added that parents who wanted to sign their children up could do so on June 28 and 29 from 5-7 pm at Village Hall. The board also voted to hire counselors for the summer camp during the meeting.

Proclaimation Honors Aisling Cuffe

A bright note for the meeting was the reading of a proclamation honoring Aisling Cuffe for her many achievements as both an athlete and student. Trustee James Kane smiled as he took several minutes to read Cuffe’s achievements, most recently breaking the national high school 2 mile record.

Village Mayor Brendan Coyne said that he recently got the chance to speak with Cuffe when he told her she would be the Fourth of July Parade’s Grand Marshall.

“Her first reaction when I told her was to ask if she would still be allowed to run the Main Street mile,” said Coyne.
