On the morning of July 23 expect to see kayaks racing out to Bannerman Island and back.

The Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson Board of Trustees gave the go ahead Monday for The Great Bannerman Island Kayak Race. The race is being sponsored by Storm King Adventure Tours. SKAT owner Kris Seiz first brought the idea to the board during its May 9 work session.

The race will benefit the Bannerman Island Trust, a non-profit group working to restore the island’s castle and summer home and, eventually, use the buildings as historical education sites. The buildings were first built around 1901 by Francis Bannerman as a means to store the surplus military supplies Bannerman sold.

Seiz told the board she hoped to have about 60 entrants to the race, which will start at 9 am from Donahue Park and run into the early afternoon. She added that the racers would go ten at a time and be judged by their times.

While the board initially liked the idea, they wanted to work out the finer details, such as parking and making sure that Mountain Valley Guides, the other kayak tour company in the village, didn’t schedule a tour that could accidentally interrupt the race.

By Monday’s business meeting, these issues had been resolved. Mayor Brendan Coyne said that the entrance fee for the race would include the money for an entrant’s one-day parking pass at the river. It was also reported that Mountain Valley Guides had been notified of the race and there wasn’t an issue.
