The 85 cadets at the New York Military Academy in Cornwall filled the parade grounds on Sunday, once again taking part in the traditional Mother’s Day parade.

On the hillside, families, friends and a few members of the community came to watch the formal presentation by the cadets who passed ceremoniously in front of the review stand. Some played in the academy’s 16-piece marching band, others formed the color guard and each cadet took his or her place in the formation under Superintendant Coverdale’s’s watchful eye.

“I started smiling last night at the prom,” Major Coverdale said after the ceremony, “to be doing this all over again when a year ago I didn’t think we would be here.” He was referring to the announcement made last April that the 125-year-old military institution would cease operations after the 2010 class graduated. Alumni, staff and local business owners rallied to save from the school with a $5 million loan and to build a renewed commitment to a strong academic program that would attract a top quality cadet. Twenty-one seniors will graduate next month.

On the parade ground, Robin Butler was one of thirteen mothers and surrogates who received a bouquet of flowers on Mother’s Day. Her son, First Captain Brandon Butler, started at NYMA as a freshman and she hated to think that he would not be able to graduate there. “I was depressed, upset and anxious,” she remembered, “but I always felt that the school was going to open again.” Butler credits her son’s NYMA education for molding his character in a positive way. “What he has gained here is priceless,” she said.

Cornwall resident Richard Massimi also came by to view the parade. His nephew is among the small graduating class and his own son studied at the school several years ago. Massimi said he noticed that now the school grounds look better and he found a new attitude in the cadets. “You can see they are much more disciplined,” he said.

In the fall, NYMA hopes to expand its enrollment in the existing program and in March it announced classes will be offered in September for students in grades one through six in a partnership with the Butterhill Day School
