General News: Village to Keep Fulltime Officers

May 06, 2011

The mayor of Cornwall-on-Hudson has informed the police union that the village has no intention of abolishing the two full-time officers positions in the police department. In a letter dated April 26, 2011, Mayor Brendan Coyne said that as a result, the union’s charges of improperly eliminating the positions could be dropped.

Last November, the two officers filling those positions were told that they had six months to find a new job. Police chief Paul Weber said that part-time officers would provide adequate police protection while saving the village at least $133,000 a year.

Following the announcement, more than 100 residents and local police officers attended a public meeting in which many spoke in favor of retaining the full-timers. Former mayor Joseph Gross and trustee Barbara Gosda supported the move as a way to control spending, although the positions continued to be budgeted for the new fiscal year, 2011-12.

Before he was elected as mayor in March, Coyne said he favored keeping the two full-time officers, John Pena and Arthur Terwilliger. No public discussion about the positions or vote by the current board of trustees has occurred since the election.

Trustee Kane thanked the police chief for cost reduction, and states the agrees with the layoffs. Trustee Edsall agrees with Kane and states that the need for layoffs is a reality

I question why the above article states clearly "Joseph Gross and Barbara Gosdda supported the move" and gave no mention to the other trustees ... It was openly supported by all sitting there 11/10
