With sunny weather forecast for this weekend, the organizers of the Labyrinth Project at The Grail in Cornwall-on-Hudson are calling all volunteers to begin the construction of this maze-like meditation center. Lead organizer Barbara Smith Gioia is looking forward to getting the stonework in place and creating the paths of the labyrinth that she has been planning since last fall. Work on the project has been delayed three times due to muddy conditions and foul weather and Gioia is counting on the third time to be the charm.

Delays also plagued a presentation by labyrinth designer Terry Murray, who had to reschedule his talk about the meaning and history of labyrinths three times due to snowstorms this winter. “It’s a combination of excitement and relief,” Gioia said about the approaching construction. “We’re really looking forward to it and hoping that we have enough people”

Saturday, May 7th,, is World Labyrinth Day but Gioia said that the labyrinth will not be ready for its official unveiling, noting that a grand opening date will be announced in the future.

A Design, A Wall, A Path

Murray will be laying out the outline of the Labyrinth path this Friday and on Saturday, and Sunday volunteers will bring wheelbarrows of stone to the site that is tucked behind old stone walls on The Grail’s property between Duncan Avenue and Boulevard. The field stones will be stacked along the walkway to create 10-12-inch high walls. A cushiony playground mulch will be spread along the walkway.

Volunteers, who will be served lunch on both days, are asked to work four-hour shifts, from either 9 am to noon or 1 to 4 pm. If you are interested in being part of the Labyrinth construction, you can call Barbara Smith Gioia at (845) 239-1123.

Comments:

Just a small correction to this lovely article: The designer of the labyrinth is Terry Murray, not Terry Murphy as printed here. He's done a beautiful job and will be overseeing the actual construction this weekend. Many thanks to all the local supporters of this project.
