General News: Nature Museum Celebrates Earth Day

April 20, 2011

From the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum

Folks at the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum are getting ready their annual Earth Day celebrations. If you’re a hiker or outdoor enthusiast be sure to mark Saturday, April 30 on your calendar and make plans to attend the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum’s fifth Annual Hike-A-Thon. The Hike is one of the Museum’s major fundraisers for the year.

An event for the whole family, the 2011 Hike-A-Thon will once again kick-off the Museum’s Earth Day celebration and the season opening of the Discovery Quest trails at the Outdoor Discovery Center on Muser Drive off Angola Road in Cornwall. Earth Day activities will include a Family Fun Fair, and a Community Yard Sale (to encourage people to Reuse and Recycle!).

“Combining the Hike-A-Thon with the Museum’s Earth Day celebration was a great success last year,” said Jackie Grant, Executive Director of the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum. “Friends of the Museum supported our unique fundraising “Hike with a purpose”, and returned from the hike to enjoy hands-on Earth Day activities, and even do a little shopping at the Community Yard Sale. There was something for everyone – and this year promises to be filled with even more fun-filled activities,” Grant continued.

Now in its fifth year, the Hike-A-Thon has proven to be a very successful fundraiser for the Nature Museum. “For those interested in supporting the Museum, it’s easy to get involved with the Hike-A-Thon,” said Hike committee member co-chair and Museum trustee Susan Christensen. “Hikers are asked to form teams and seek support from friends, family, co-workers and local businesses to help them meet their fundraising goals. There’s no registration fee, we simply ask hikers to try for a goal of raising $100 per hiker.”

Hikers will be able to choose from a variety of trails, as well as guided and independent hikes. Hikes range in difficulty from a very easy to a more vigorous hike, as well as the Museum’s moderate to slightly challenging trails for those hikers in between. The event will start at 9:00 a.m. with group warm-up exercises and hikers will set off soon after. The trails will be supervised until noon, giving everyone a chance to enjoy a beautiful day outdoors. Earth Day activities and the Community Yard Sale will begin at 10:00 a.m. The Hike will be held rain or shine.
