General News: Hole Found in Village Hall Roof

Village hall is in need of repairs, notably a hole in the roof toward the back of the building.
Village DWP Superintendent David Halverson said during the board of trustees meeting Monday, he first noticed the hole early last week.Trustee Mark Edsall was jokingly optimistic about the new development.
“It didn’t happen to be a window, did it,” Edsall asked.
It wasn’t a window. Upon further inspection Halverson found that the hole was caused by rot from moisture damage. A soffit had also fallen off the back of building on the side that faces Walden savings bank.
Halverson was quick to assure the board that moisture issues didn’t mean that the roof would leak in poor weather, but speculated that there was more moisture damage to the building than what he found. He added that he’d already patched the hole, and had gotten estimates on the work that needed to be done.
When the board members asked how long it had been since any major repair work on the building had been done responded that there hadn’t been any since the village first bought the building in the mid 90s.
The repair work presents a problem to the board however. When asked about the cost of the repair sat Monday’s meeting Halverson wouldn’t give an estimate, but said it was significantly more than the $6,000 budget for the building’s maintenance.
Arlene Roberts, village Planning and Zoning secretary said that the estimates for repair included a permanent fix to the hole, as well as replacing all the building soffits and installing new gutters.
Roberts explained that all the soffits needed to be replaced because current ones are made out of wood and are not in production anymore. She added that the building’s gutters were also in poor condition. Roberts also confirmed that an estimate would be available for the village board to review at its meeting Monday.
