A group of about 50 people assembled outside the Cornwall-on-Hudson village hall on Tuesday morning to remember the service of police officer Robert D’Egidio who died while on duty 20 years ago.

Police officers from the village and town, along with elected officials from both municipalities and other village employees, stood in the rain while Officer John Pena laid a memorial wreath next to the monument that holds a plaque honoring D’Egidio’s service. His widow, Susan, mother, Helen, and son, Robert, Jr., who was only nine months old when his father died, were also present for the ceremony.

Village police officer Patricia Willard welcomed people and spoke about Officer D’Egidio and “the friendship and the gifts that Bobby gave us,” including his willingness to jump to help anyone who needed him.

Officer D’Egidio Died Chasing Suspects

Officer D’Egidio was providing back-up assistance to the town of Cornwall police the day he died in 1991. A town officer had stopped a vehicle on Route 9W and when the suspects fled the vehicle near Old Forge Hill Road, Officer D’Egidio went after them. He took several stepped, then collapsed, taken down by a heart attack.

Village officer Michael Lug spoke outside in the rain, where he recalled D’Egidio’s dedication to the community. “You couldn’t have asked for a better person,” he said.

His Memory Kept Alive at Police Station

Inside, Officer Lug shared a newspaper clipping that he keeps describing that fateful day 20 years ago. He also keeps a photo of D’Egidio in his locker, a reminder of his fellow officer who gave his life in the line of duty.
