The scene: New York City circa 1950. The streets are bustling with young men and women, some headed to work, others to play and at least one young mother gets a lot of attention when she pushes a baby carriage.

Guys and Dolls, the musical production that takes over the stage of Cornwall Central High School on Thursday night and runs through the weekend, tells the story of some of these people: Guys who are looking to make a fast buck at the crap tables and two very different women who are seeking love and marriage.

A Tale of Love and Craps

The storyline for Guys and Dolls is relatively simple. Gangster Nathan Detroit is obsessed with finding a place to hold a crap game, a place that doesn’t cost a lot of money and where the cops won’t find him and the other gamblers.

His girlfriend of 14 years, Adelaide, is a lead dancer at the glamorous Hot Box Club, but what she really wants is a wedding and for Nathan to give up his gambling ways.

The gentle leader of the local Salvation Army mission is out to save the soul of sinners, but as she reveals in the duet, “I’ll Know,” she, too, is looking for love.

Actors Deliver Great Entertainment on Stage

Senior Matt Begbie* plays Nathan Detroit with a hilarious Brooklyn accent and comic facial expressions that will set the audience roaring as he bounces across the stage. His sidekicks and fellow gangsters, including Nicely-Nicely Johnson, Benny Southstreet, Harry the Horse and Rusty Charlie, hang on to Nathan’s every word and encourage him to move ahead with his plan for the “oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York.”

Adelaide, played by Shona Ford (Friday/Sunday) and Alyssa Marino (Thursday/Saturday) is all glitter and allure when she performs with the Hat Box Girls, but back in her dressing room she worries about throwing her youth away on Nathan in the song “Adelaide’s Lament.”

The storyline gets complicated when Nathan bets a fellow gambler that he can’t get Sgt. Sarah Brown of the Salvation Army to accompany him to Havana, Cuba for dinner the next day. The prim Sgt. Brown, played by Sage Kirwan,* is won over by Sky Masterson and by the end of the first act, she is singing a love song with a gangster, who has promised to fill her mission with repentant sinners.

Teachers and Parents Contribute to Show’s Success

The story of Guys and Dolls will amuse you and the tremendous performances by these actors, singers and dancers will make you think you are really on Broadway. Director Rich Aufiero brings his incredible talent and attention to detail to the production while Tony Ravinsky not only oversees the construction of a set that recreates Times Square, but he serves as musical and technical director of the show. Music teacher Karen Boden is the pianist and assistant musical director. Beth Whalen serves as the choreographer for several complex numbers (including one in which Nathan Detroit is carried by his cohorts) and Pam Heutis, led a team to create the period costumes of the guys and dolls.

Many more students appear onstage and offstage as part of the technical crew. The final product of all this effort is great entertainment this weekend.

Tickets to the show, which opens Thursday night with the understudy leads who give commanding performances of their own, are available at the box office at Cornwall Central High School. Showtime is 7 pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday; 2 pm on Sunday.

*Understudy leads are Dante Giannetta as Nathan and Ryan Wenke as Sgt. Sarah Brown. Pam Edmonds plays Wenke’s role as Gen. Carnright on Thursday
