When King’s Pommes Frites opened on Saturday there was little fanfare, which was part of the plan for owner Annette King.

“It was nice and quiet,” said King. “We want to get comfortable first and get all the kinks worked out.”

The new café on Main Street in Cornwall carries a unique style of food: the main course is essentially French fries. The fries or, as King prefers, pommes frites, aren’t like those found at the average fast-food place. King and her husband, Jermaine, cut the fries fresh every day, and she describes them as being crispy on the outside and more like mashed potatoes on the inside.

Even more surprising are the daily specials. So far the eatery has offered customers specials like Philly cheese steak, pork and beans and even chicken pot pies. These are all plays on the original dishes, with the fries replacing certain part of the dish, said King.

For patrons who just want to focus on the fries, the couple serves them up in paper cones with 31 kinds of dipping sauces from which to choose. The cones make the food handy for someone on the go, but if a customer wants to eat in, the Kings have that covered as well. The restaurant’s tables have holes drilled through them to fit the cones.

King said she and her husband, who is a graduate of the French Culinary Institute in New York City, got the idea from a similar restaurant in Manhattan that the couple used to frequent before they moved to the area four years ago.

“It’s very popular in the city,” said King “We actually get some of our supplies from them.”

The café is located at the corner of Torrey Lane, in the same space that used to house The Storm King Eatery. King said that she thought about bringing the restaurant to fruition while she was in Prima Pizza one day and saw the space across the street empty.

Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson resident Roxanne Benson and her boyfriend, Jon Van Hounten, were in the café on Monday for lunch. Both opted for large cones of fries and a couple of different sauces, and were pleasantly surprised.

“We heard about it from some of our friends, and we really wanted to try this place,” said Benson. “I can tell you right now, their food is great.”
